Using a Vodaphone in Spain
Note: This page has not been updated
since 2006.
You can get the charges texted to you
for free: Before you leave the UK, just text FROM followed by the name of
the country you're visiting to 4636.
 | For example, if you're going to Spain,
text FROM SPAIN to 4636.
|
 | Vodaphone will send you a text
message with the cost of making calls, receiving calls and sending texts from
your chosen country.
|
 | This is free if you do it from the U.K. |
 | They will also give you the name
of the Vodafone "preferred network"
which will help you keep your costs as low as possible, although hopefully
your phone will do it automatically. |
Once you switch your mobile on,
it will search for a network and automatically register onto a direct
dial network where available.
(If this doesn't happen automatically, you'll need to
search for one manually, although mine always does it automatically). This is an
option called something like "phone settings" In this case,
as I understand it, you should choose the local
Vodafone preferred network since it is supposed to
offer the best value when making and receiving calls.)
If you are using a direct dial network, you can
dial out just like when you are at home. You just need to replace the initial
0 with the appropriate country code. All other services like Voicemail and
191 are the same.
PAYT
 | To dial, replace the initial 0 with +44 e.g. for the UK number 01234
5678910 you should dial +44 1234 5678910 . (You have to find the + on your
keypad.) I think that you can also dial 0044 ... but they don't tell you
that. |
 | If you are calling a different country use the appropriate country code
instead of +44, so for Spanish numbers you will have to call +34 then the
whole Spanish number (they don't have any number at the beginning like our 0) |
 | The 2345 TopUp Line is free. |
 | For balance enquiries, *#1345# also free. |
 | Calling costs 75p a min to UK and also to Spain; texts are 49p
"Plus applicable domestic rates." It costs 75p to receive a call. |
 | "Vodaphone Live works but costs money - maybe 30-40p a page at a guess. |
Sending and receiving texts
To Send a text When texting a UK number
there is no need to put it into international format, simply text the same way
as you do in the UK.
There is no charge for receiving a text message.
